Completed - Broad Cove

Photos of home when purchased, under construction, and finished project. Scope of project included a whole-house green remodel and a home energy retrofit.

  • Broad Cove after Renovation
  • Before and after front facade. What's different here? For starters, we painted the house a lighter color with offsetting trim that is more in keeping with the neighborhood. Our carpenters, Andrew Wilkie and Josh Labelle, installed colonial trim accents around the front door. Further, we replaced all the windows with energy efficient models, built a new front porch/covered walkway, wired in new lighting, and landscaped the the front yard.
  • Before and after of garage. One of the main drawbacks when we purchased this home was that there was no walkway. The makeshift path leading to the front door was icy and uneven, so Andrew and Josh built this covered walkway wide enough to serve as a front porch as well. Designed and constructed by Land Plans, Inc. using stone pavers, the lighted walkway now leads to an air lock entryway between the garage and the kitchen.

  • Airlock entryway with doors leading to the garage (left) back deck (center) and kitchen (right). We built a cork floor over the insulated slab and sub floor. The walls were packed with cellulose and baseboard heat added.
  • Before and after of kitchen. As you can tell from the photo on the left, the kitchen was not updated from its original configuration. We gutted the kitchen, installed new red oak flooring, white shaker cabinets with glass doors, Deer Isle granite counters, a gas stove, EnergyStar stainless steel appliances, as well as a beautiful new sink illuminated by energy efficient LED lighting shown right.
  • Before, during, and after of the view from the dining room into the kitchen. Andrew and Josh removed the wall and closet separating the dining room from the kitchen. A support beam was installed to account for the removed wall. Where the wall once stood, we built a center island with a butcher block top and large drawers providing ample storage.
  • Before and after of living room. We refinished the floors throughout the home, painted every surface, and did a deep clean. Beyond replacing the windows throughout, we removed a door leading to a non-existent deck off the living room (watch out!) and installed a window in its place. The back deck is now accessed through the rear of the air lock entry, which is closer to the kitchen.
  • Before and after of 2nd floor bathroom. The 2nd floor bathroom, which serves the kids' rooms or guest rooms, had a decent layout to begin with. We installed a new low-flow toilet, vanity and mirror, porcelain floor tiles, and an energy-efficient exhaust fan.
  • Before and after of master bedroom. We reconfigured this room to accommodate a master bath and comfortably fit a king sized bed. Shown here, we relocated the closet to the far wall and added a storage space where the old closet once stood (tucked behind right side wall)
  • Additional view of master suite. We replaced the hollow core doors with solid core, six panel doors and new hardware.
  • Master bed and bath. We added a full bathroom to the master suite, including tile floors, a shower with subway tile and glass doors, in addition to a white shaker-style vanity with a brushed nickel faucet and low flush toilet.
  • Before and after of one of the two kids' rooms. Beyond refinishing the floors and painting, we upgraded and added electrical outlets throughout the house to accommodate the many gadgets owned by the modern family.
  • Before and after of basement. The daylight basement was divided into two separate rooms, one of which (shown) was partially finished. We had the asbestos tile and mastic (green floor) professionally abated and installed new flooring. The basement was rewired and framed, adding new windows, an insulated exterior door, and laundry and utility rooms. Further, all new drywall was added after removing the faux wood paneling.
  • Before and after of basement. This picture shows the second room in the basement, which was previously unfinished. Andrew and Josh cut in two new windows and trimmed out the entire basement. Rook Energy Solutions air sealed and insulated the walls and rim joists using spray foam and rigid foam board. Check out the Broad Cove Case Study for further details regarding the home energy retrofit.
  • Before, during, and after of backyard and deck. We regraded the slope in the backyard and installed an insulated drain to prevent water from entering the daylight basement. Further, we used Land Plans to design and build new steps down to the basement where we installed a new insulated exterior door. Off of the airlock entryway we constructed a new deck and reseeded the backyard.
